| Esztergom, the place of birth and coronation of St Stephan, the first Hungarian king, was the capital of Hungary (after city of Székesfehérvár) from 972 till the Mongol invasion of the country in 1241-42. On the castle hill you can see Hungary's major church, the country's main cathedral, designed by Pál Küchel and Joseph Hild in 1822-56. With its 118 m length, 49 m width and 100 m height this is Hungary's most monumental represantative of the neoclassic style. |
